All,

John Mulchaey heads a working group to simplify laser-cutting slit masks
at Las Campanas. Goals include improved documentation, observer support,
and operations support.

Use this list (lasercut@mailman.ociw.edu) to discuss these topics as
well as any others related to laser cutting slit masks at Las Campanas.
This includes equipment maintenance, MMIRS, and the WFCCD conversion to
laser cutting.

You can change your mailing list options by going to the bottom of
http://mailman.ociw.edu/mailman/listinfo/lasercut, inserting your email
address (the one this message was sent to), and clicking "Unsubscribe or
edit options." At the bottom of the page that appears, click "remind" to
get your auto-generated password, which you can then use to change your
options.

IMACS slitmask users (NOT LDSS users),

The following is from John Mulchaey (Chair, slitmask working group):

==========
As of October 2005, users must submit their mask files using the LCO
on-line Slit Mask Manager (http://www.lco.cl/masks/). For IMACS, it is
only necessary to submit the .SMF files created by the task "maskgen".
Please do not use any form of compression on the uploaded files.

You can monitor the status of your masks using the mask database
(http://www.lco.cl/masks/search/).

Please remember you must submit your mask files at least 30 days prior
to the start of your observing run.
==========

The Slit Mask Manager is a browser upload form for .SMF files. A
comprehensive user manual is linked on front page. Work is proceeding to
include LDSS, WFCCD, MMIRS masks in this system but until that
capability is announced, please do not submit non-IMACS masks to the
Slit Mask Manager.

To all laser cutter users:

Some of you have heard about the failure of the laser cutting machine
used to make slit masks for LDSS and IMACS. The short story is that the
machine is now working.

In more detail:

The laser cutter failed in early November 2005. Cut quality had been
deteriorating and we were already in the process of planning a tuneup;
this accelerated that operation.

A PRIMA/Convergent engineer (Mike Valente) was immediately scheduled for
a repair trip after the failure. In the meantime, diagnostics were done
by on-site staff to prepare for the repair work.

It was found that the spatial filter was damaged. Unfortunately, a power
meter needed for the replacement was not available (the one purchased
with the machine was not up to this task) so the damaged spatial filter
was removed. The spatial filter is a small pinhole that masks wide field
light to clean up the cutting beam.

Removing the filter slightly increased the width of the cut (kerf) from
0.0030 to 0.0035 inches (these are estimates).

We have ordered a new power meter for the laser system and plan to
install a new spatial filter in the future.

The LCO staff helped out tremendously by doing the laser diagnostics,
arranging last minute transportation and housing for Mike Valente, and
doing overtime slit mask cutting to catch up on the schedule (Oscar,
Gaston, Patricio, Frank, Marc, Dave, Patricia, Jorge; did I forget
anybody?). We also thank SBS staff (Jeanette) for quickly handling and
pushing the repair order.

I talked with Michael Valente, who represents our laser manufacturer, a
couple of weeks ago and he mentioned that our laser does not cut copper.
I asked if using a flat copper base to hold our anodized aluminum foil
masks with, say, a vacuum would work and he sounded optimistic. The
example he was familiar with was cutting away photoresist from a
copper-clad board.

I've asked Tyson to start working on a setup to test this procedure.
