Alan:

Our upgrades to the MagIC software (LOIS) are nearly complete, and
tests at MIT with the engineering CCD at MIT have begun. The new
version of LOIS will have single-amp mode and allow the aborting of
scripts. Over the next month we also will be implementing an
"occultation mode" that will fix the timing error and enable the
high-speed readout of a subframe. We would like to use this mode for
MagIC to observe a stellar occultation by Charon in July. This
occultation work is in collaboration with Dave Osip, who has duPont
time.

Assuming that our upgrades and testing at MIT continues according to
plan, we are looking at shipping the computer to LCO at the next
available opportunity. Julie Kane and I would stay a few days after
our June run on the Clay (June 6-9) to switch MagIC over to the new
computer.

This work could be done with no impact on the scheduled observer(?),
since we would be working in the room that houses the MagIC Sun and
not require any time on the sky. If all the modes appear to work, we
would hope to take some dome flats during the day, if that would be
possible. If the modes do not work, we would attempt to ascertain
the reason. One extreme possibility for things not working with the
new software would be a wiring error in the dewar. At that point we
would have to have someone come to Chile to fix the wiring error (or
ship the dewar back to MIT for inspection and repair).

Following this engineering work, the next step would be to get some
time on the sky during the next engineering run on the Clay (the
three nights of June 21-23).

1) What are your thoughts on this general plan?

2) Where should we ship the new MagIC computer to go with your next
general shipment to Chile?

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the updates; it sounds like things are progressing quickly.

SHIPPING THE COMPUTER

The easiest way to ship the computer is to send it to Pasadena where it
can be loaded into our May air shipment. It should arrive in Pasadena by
May 9, 2005 and we would bill you for the shipping cost when we receive
the invoice. You should send a description of the equipment and its
dollar value to Earl Harris, along with your contact information and an
address for billing (important).

Ship the computer to:

David Osip
c/o Alan Uomoto (important, or Dave might be billed for shipping)
813 Santa Barbara Street
Pasadena, CA 91101
626-577-1122

Earl will mark it for David Osip/MagIC and put it in the air shipment.

DAYTIME ENGINEERING AT LCO

The post-June 9 computer installation part of your engineering plan
looks OK to me, although Frank should check to make sure it makes sense
with his crew schedule. I think it's important that Dave Osip be on-site
as a science collaborator while this work is done.

I think it's risky to plan on shipping the dewar back to MIT for repair
if you have an occultation date in July so you should be prepared to
have someone come to LCO for the modifications.

You will probably also want to make sure that the possibility of MagIC
not being available for the end-of-June MIT run is acceptable.

NIGHTTIME ENGINEERING AT LCO

I have been thinking about June engineering on Clay and the preliminary
plan suggests a fair amount of high priority work on LDSS and lower
priority work on the guider at the MIKE port. If all you need is a night
to check out of your finished work, I don't think it'll be a problem. If
you think you'll need more time, or are expecting to do more hardware or
software work at that time, we should talk about it in more detail.

Best wishes,
Alan

Jim, et al.,

We would like to delay the scheduled May 12 air shipment to LCO from
Pasadena by one week, to leave on May 19, arriving at LCO around May 27.
I notice that Dave Osip is on vacation until after the 27th and that Jim
and Julie aren't going to arrive at the observatory until early June so
nobody will be at the observatory to work on the computer anyway.

Is it OK to delay the shipment of the MagIC Sun computer until then? If
so, we would need the shipment from you by Monday, May 16, 2005.

Thanks,
Alan

Alan:

Yes, it is OK. That will give us some extra time to install a second
internal disk drive at MIT.
